How OnPoint Started
Although I went to school for architecture, I paid my way through school by working with technology. This developed into a business which grew rapidly, and then almost collapsed! I made the same mistake that most business owners make. My business had grown quickly and I didn’t have a good organizational process that would handle the growth. I solved this problem with software. At first, I tried off the shelf software, but nothing worked quite the way I wanted it to. Since I worked on projects all over the country, and sometimes even overseas, I wanted something cloud based that could travel with me, and could coordinate a large number of projects and people without my constant micromanagement. I found some open-source software that I could customize, but even that didn’t fully do what I wanted. This need was especially true for my engineering projects, which could be very complicated. I eventually bit the bullet and worked with some friends to develop custom software for my business. It took several years and more money than I’d like to think about, but it did exactly what I wanted! I could keep track of hundreds of simultaneous projects and dozens of contractors, and my only admin staff was a part time assistant who worked from home half the time! A friend of mine was impressed with my software, had an idea for a land survey company that specialized in mortgage inspections, and asked if I could build him a version customized for land survey management. The software worked great, he tripled the size of his company, and eventually sold it for a nice profit. We ended up helping a couple of his friends with technology for their survey businesses, and I noticed a common trend. There simply wasn’t good software that specialized in land survey management. So we built OnPoint.
